How to Speed Up Windows 11 in 10 Simple Steps

Is your Windows 11 PC slow? Follow these 10 proven steps to make it faster, from startup apps to storage cleanup.

Why Windows 11 slows down

Over time, Windows collects startup programs, temporary files, background apps and browser clutter. None of these alone ruins performance, but together they can make even a good PC feel slow. The good news is that most fixes take only a few minutes and need no paid software.

1. Turn off unnecessary startup apps

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, go to Startup apps, and disable programs you do not need at boot, such as chat apps, updaters and game launchers. Restart your PC and notice the difference in boot time.

2. Uninstall apps you never use

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps. Remove trial software, old toolbars and apps you installed once and forgot. This frees storage and stops background services you never asked for.

3. Free up storage with Storage Sense

In Settings, go to System, then Storage, and turn on Storage Sense. It safely removes temporary files, old downloads and Recycle Bin items. Aim to keep at least 15 to 20 percent of your drive free.

4. Update Windows and drivers

Outdated drivers, especially graphics and chipset drivers, can cause lag. Check Settings, then Windows Update, and install available updates. Then check your PC maker's support page for driver updates.

5. Reduce visual effects

Search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, and choose Adjust for best performance, or turn off animations and transparency. On older hardware this alone can make menus feel much snappier.

6. Check for malware

Run a full scan with Windows Security. Malware and unwanted programs often run in the background and slow everything down. Remove anything it finds, then restart.

7. Restart regularly

A simple restart clears memory leaks and stuck processes. If you only ever put your PC to sleep, restart at least once a week.

8. Upgrade the weakest part, if needed

If your PC still uses a hard drive, switching to an SSD is the single biggest speed upgrade. Adding RAM also helps if you often have many browser tabs open.

Final checklist

Work through the steps above one by one, restart, and test the apps you use most. If a step does not help, you can undo it. Keep your system updated and repeat the cleanup once a month to keep Windows 11 fast.
